End of Year Calendar Changes

Dear Meridian Families:

Now that the calendar is officially telling us that spring has arrived, it seems like a safe time to provide an update on our current make-up day situation.  As you are likely aware, we have had twelve (12) days of cancellations this school year due to weather.  The state forgives the first six (6) cancellation days and the State Superintendent can approve a waiver for an additional three (3) days.  Meridian has been approved for the three (3) additional days, which means that at this point, we are planning to reschedule an additional three (3) days at the end of the original school calendar.  For your planning purposes, here are the current changes:

·         Thursday, June 6th will now be a full day of instruction

·         Friday, June 7th will be an additional day of instruction.

·         Monday, June 10th will be an additional day of instruction.

·         Tuesday, June 11th will be the last day of instruction.  This will be a half (1/2) day.

The state legislature is still considering the forgiveness of additional time due to the declared State of Emergency, but it is not known at this time if any action will take place and at the earliest, nothing will be known until mid-April.  Because it’s a topic that has been discussed in Lansing for weeks now, we are at a point where we need to move forward with planning and we will make adjustments to our calendar if something changes with the forgiveness of additional days.  For those who may wonder if it’s possible for additional time to be added to days, the answer there is no.  The state sets both a days and hours requirement for schools and both must be met, so adding time to the school day is not an option.  We will keep you posted if additional changes take place.  If you have any specific questions, please contact your child’s school.
