MECHS Families,

From all members of the MECHS Faculty, we would like to all wish you a Happy Holiday Season. We hope all MECHS learners get a chance to unwind and take a much needed break from academics. The following memo provides information pertaining to the end of Semester One.

Holiday break begins at the conclusion of the school day today and school will resume on January 3. During the break, the Main Office will be closed.

The end of the first semester is on January 13. During the week leading up to the conclusion of the semester, we will be running our normal day and clock schedule. Courses at MECHS will be holding capstone assessments to conclude the semester, but this will occur using a multitude of assessment techniques. Teachers are encouraged to give a capstone project, portfolio, or other summative assessment. It is our belief that these diverse assessment methods provide opportunities for students to showcase “deeper learning” from their semester courses.

After the conclusion of the semester, teachers will have an additional week to finalize their MP2 and SM1 grades in Skyward. We no longer mail report cards home, but a printed copy can be obtained upon request to the office. Refer to the course syllabus for a breakdown of how grade weights are calculated. When issues arise or clarification is needed regarding course progress or a course grade, I encourage reaching out to the classroom teacher (or teachers in an integrated course) as the first point of contact. A list of MECHS contacts is listed at merps.org/staff.

Starting January 17, our winter NWEA testing window will begin. We use this data to guide educational programming, student support, and now as a metric for dual enrollment readiness. Individually, students will be analyzing their scores in their Advisory courses to determine areas of focus and learning goals.

Other Events on the Horizon:

  • No School January 16 (staff PD)

  • Snow Glow Game/Dance, Feb 3

  • No School Feb 10/13 (Mid-winter break)

  • Winter Learner Led Conferences, Feb 28 4:30-7:30

Enjoy your winter Holiday Break. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have further questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Scott LaFever
